I was commissioned to create two hip-hop compositions for screenwriter / director Destin Daniel Cretton’s latest feature film Short Term 12. Shortly after submitting my work to Destin and ST12’s prolific scorer Joel P. West, 21 year old Victorville based actor/ vocalist Keith Stanfield recorded some impromptue lyrics over the tracks. This marriage of voice and production paved the way for the greatest hip-hop collaboration I have been a part of since beginning my beat making career 11 years ago.
“A favorite with festival-goers since its first screening Sunday morning, the film was written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, whose previous film was “I Am Not a Hipster.” It stars Brie Larson in a quietly riveting, breakout performance and features John Gallagher Jr. and Kaitlyn Dever in supporting roles.” -Los Angeles Times
““Short Term 12,” about a young supervisor at a foster-care facility, was written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. The film garnered strong reviews and featured a much-talked-about lead performance by Brie Larson.” -New York Times
“Short Term 12” is a film about scars, some physical, others emotional, but all examined with a sensitivity and understanding that cuts deep. Set in a group home for damaged adolescents where staff members face many of the same challenges as their young charges, this compelling human drama finds fresh energy in the inspirational-teacher genre, constantly revealing new layers to its characters — none more complex than Brie Larson’s thick-skinned supervisor. Inexplicably passed over by Sundance (which awarded a short version its 2009 jury prize), the stunning SXSW fest winner puts the recent Park City competition lineup to shame.” -Variety
“Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, “Short Term 12” focuses on a young woman named Grace (Brie Larson), who is fighting as many demons as some of the children she takes care of in a foster care facility (standouts among the supporting cast include actress Kaitlyn Dever and newcomer Keith Stanfield). After the world premiere screening at SXSW on Sunday morning, Cretton cited “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” as inspiration; with Larson carrying such a heavy burden in the leading role, though, “Short Term 12” often recalls the Ryan Gosling film “Half Nelson” in the best ways possible. (Gosling, for what it’s worth, received a Best Actor nomination for depicting his troubled educator.) Thanks to her revelatory performance in “Short Term 12,” wildly different supporting roles in “Don Jon” and “The Spectacular Now,” and a short film to her name, Larson is the unofficial queen of this year’s SXSW. Following the premiere of “Short Term 12,” HuffPost Entertainment spoke with the breakout actress about the emotional toll of playing Grace and where her career can go next.”
“‘Short Term 12’ is an inspiring, beautifully crafted film that represents the best of what American Independent cinema can be,” said Vincent Scordino, Vice President of Theatrical Acquisitions, for Cinedigm. “This is a career-defining performance for Brie Larson and all of us at Cinedigm are supremely excited to share this incredible film with audiences everywhere. This is exactly the kind of film Cinedigm is looking to champion as we expand our theatrical presence.” – Cinedigm
